As a pediatrician, I have often found myself marveling at the innate wisdom and potential present in every child I have encountered. From the bright-eyed inquisitiveness of a toddler to the earnest questions of a teenager, I have been privileged to see firsthand the unfolding of young lives—each unique, each filled with divine promise. As a parent, the journey is no less awe-inspiring. My own children have been my greatest teachers, often mirroring back to me the values and lessons I have sought to instill. Through my spiritual path inspired by Sai Baba’s teachings, I have learned to view parenting as a sacred duty; an opportunity to nurture not just the physical, but also the spiritual growth of children.

In my years of practice and personal growth, I have come to believe that parenting is akin to nurturing a garden, where the seeds of potential are sown in the fertile soil of love and wisdom. The theme I wish to share with you today is ‘Sai-centric Parenting,’ a philosophy that aligns the upbringing of children with Sai Baba’s wisdom, focused on building their Four Pillars of Life: Health, Relationships, Financial Values, and Knowledge.

Let’s begin with Health, the foundation upon which all other pillars rest. Sai Baba has often emphasized the importance of a healthy body for a healthy mind. As parents, we are the stewards of our children’s well-being. Through conscious communication, we can instill in them the value of listening to their bodies and making healthful choices. I recall a family who turned meal times into moments of gratitude—a practice that transformed not only their physical health but also enriched their emotional well-being. By encouraging our children to express gratitude for the food they eat and the hands that prepared it, we cultivate their awareness and respect for nature’s abundance.

Next, we turn our attention to Relationships. Guided by the T.E.A.R. Formula—Thoughts, Emotions, Actions, and Results—we can teach our children the art of emotional regulation, helping them to navigate their feelings and build harmonious connections. I often share the story of a young patient who, through simple daily routines of expressing kindness and practicing seva (service), learned the value of empathy. By engaging children in service activities, we teach them to see the divine in others, fostering an environment where compassion naturally flourishes.

Financial Values form the third pillar, crucial for navigating the material world with integrity and wisdom. By incorporating value-based teachings inspired by Swamy’s insights, we can guide children towards financial mindfulness. Simple practices, such as keeping a ‘gratitude journal,’ can serve as a powerful tool for children to appreciate what they have rather than desire what they don’t. This practice not only teaches them the value of contentment but also helps them in understanding the flow of give and take in the universe.

Lastly, the pillar of Knowledge is where intellect and spiritual understanding converge. Encouraging curiosity and a love for learning aligns with Sai Baba’s teachings on the quest for truth. One memorable moment comes to mind; a parent shared with me their practice of ending each day with a ‘reflection session,’ where the family would discuss what they learned and observed. This not only solidified their knowledge but also strengthened their moral compass, allowing them to discern right from wrong with clarity.

As you embark on this sacred journey of parenting, I urge you to discipline with love, use every opportunity to teach your child about life’s deeper values, and always seek to practice what you preach. Parenting is not without its challenges, but with warmth, clarity, and spiritual insight, it becomes a path of mutual growth—a divine dance between you and your child.

Remember Sai Baba’s poignant words on character: “The end of education is character. Endow your children with the strength of good character, for in it lies their true wealth and security.”
