empathy for child

Reflecting back on my early days as a pediatrician, my path intertwined with my role as a parent and my deep spiritual journey led by the teachings of Sai Baba. It was during those moments, holding the tiny hands of my children or comforting a worried parent in my clinic, that I realized the divine responsibility we carry as caregivers. Parenting is not merely about nurturing; it’s an art, a delicate balance of love, guidance, and spiritual insight that shapes the very being of our children.

Let me invite you, dear parent, into the heart of Sai-centric parenting. Just as we delicately nurture the blossoms in a garden, we must thoughtfully build the Four Pillars of Life in our children: Health, Relationships, Financial Values, and Knowledge. With each pillar, we have the opportunity to embed the T.E.A.R. Formula: shaping Thoughts, Emotions, Actions, and eventually, the Results that guide their lives.

Start with Health, the cornerstone of a happy life. Notice how a child’s radiant smile reflects their state of well-being. Encourage conscious communication about their bodies and emotions, teaching them to listen inward. Once, in my clinic, a young boy came in regularly with persistent stomach aches. Through gentle conversation, we discovered his anxiety surrounding school. As we focused on emotional regulation and reassuring daily routines, his health markedly improved, highlighting the intimate connection between mind and body.

Next, let’s explore Relationships, the threads that weave our social fabric. Cultivate these bonds through empathy and active listening, inspired by Swamy’s teachings. In my practice, I witnessed a family torn by misunderstanding, only for them to unite when they began sharing gratitude journals. This small, daily act nurtured love and understanding, illuminating the profound power of gratitude in nurturing relationships.

Financial Values are not just about managing money, but about understanding the value of resources. Teach your children through simple seva activities, perhaps saving a small amount each month for humanitarian causes. In this way, financial wisdom becomes intertwined with compassion, transforming money management into an avenue of service and character building.

Knowledge, the light in a child’s world, extends beyond textbooks. Foster an environment where learning is a joyful exploration. Encourage questions, applaud curiosity, and instill discipline with love. I recall a young patient fascinated by stars; his parents nurtured this interest, setting aside evenings for stargazing. This routine not only expanded his knowledge but became a cherished family tradition, rich in connection and love.

As you embark on this journey, remember to integrate love and values into all aspects. Strengthen moral values in daily life by example; practice kindness, speak with integrity, and honor every being. Children learn profoundly through observation, so embody the values you wish for them to adopt.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Sai Baba: “Character is the most precious gift of education.” Let these words guide and inspire you as they have me, reminding us that the soul and character we nurture today will brighten the world tomorrow.
