Reflecting on my journey as a pediatrician, I am reminded of countless moments where the innocence and purity of a child have left an indelible mark on my heart. One evening, while tucking my son into bed, he looked up with those bright, questioning eyes and asked, “Dad, how do I become a good person?” In that simple question, I found both a profound challenge and a sacred duty to guide him, and it reminded me of every family and child I’ve had the privilege to learn from in my practice.

Swami’s teachings have been a beacon of light in shaping my approach both as a parent and a doctor. They remind me that parenting is a divine opportunity to nurture the Four Pillars of Life—Health, Relationships, Financial Values, and Knowledge. These pillars form the foundation upon which our children construct their lives, just as a strong temple is built on unwavering foundations.

Health, in its essence, is not just the absence of illness but a vibrant state of being that embraces physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. As parents, we can shape our children’s health through conscious communication and simple yet powerful daily routines. A memorable moment that illustrates this involved a young patient who battled chronic asthma. His family and I developed a routine where each day began with deep breathing exercises intertwined with a morning prayer—an exercise in serenity and faith that improved his condition dramatically. This approach, inspired by Swami’s teachings, demonstrates the T.E.A.R. Formula. Our thoughts and emotions (T and E) indeed affect our actions (A), leading to healthier results (R).

Relationships, the second pillar, are the threads that weave the tapestry of our lives. As parents, it is our duty to teach empathy through acts of seva, fostering connections grounded in love and understanding. Once, during a family visit, I witnessed a young sibling place a gentle kiss on her brother’s forehead during a hospital stay, whispering, “You’re my brave little lion.” In her simplicity, profound love shone through—an example of nurturing relationships with conscious, healing words.

When instilling Financial Values, we must cultivate an appreciation for the value of simplicity and the joy of sharing. Through gratitude journaling, children learn to value the abundance in their lives, no matter how seemingly small. I recall guiding a family in planting a small vegetable garden where their children took turns tending to the saplings, learning patience, hard work, and the fruits of labor—all quintessential financial values.

Knowledge, the final pillar, involves not just the accumulation of facts but the wisdom to live a life of truth and righteousness. Our duty is to encourage curiosity and learning while emphasizing moral values. Discipline with love becomes crucial here, a gentle nudge guiding our children back to the path when they stray, much like Swami’s own teachings that encourage wisdom obtained through self-exploration and thought.

Parenting imbued with Sai-centric principles creates a nurturing environment where children flourish, much like a seed watered with love, patience, and wisdom grows into a strong tree. A poignant memory from my practice involved a young boy who began embracing emotional regulation by visualizing his worries as clouds, passing the sky of his mind. This simple, guided visualization helped him handle emotions with grace—a technique any parent can impart powerfully.

In the gentle words of Sai Baba, “Character is the most precious gift of education.” This sentiment is the lighthouse guiding us, reminding parents and children alike of the imperative duty to uphold values that define our character.
