education ethics

Reflecting on my journey as a pediatrician, a parent, and a spiritual seeker, I am often reminded of a powerful lesson, drawn not just from medical books but from the many faces of children and parents who have taught me so much more than I could have ever anticipated. I recall a particularly poignant moment with a young patient and her mother. They came to me for a routine check-up, but the conversation unfolded into an exploration of fears, hopes, and tiny victories. The mother, worried about every small detail of her child’s health, was gently reminded by the child herself with her innocent, yet profound words: “Mom, don’t worry. I feel your hugs more than your worries.” It was a simple reminder of how children perceive love and attention, not through our anxieties but through our warm embrace and gentle guidance.

From these real-life encounters, I have come to understand that parenting is indeed a spiritual journey as much as it is a practical one. In guiding our children, we are shaping their Sai-centric lives, deeply rooted in the Four Pillars of Life—Health, Relationships, Financial Values, and Knowledge. Each of these pillars is not merely a goal but a process, a path that we walk with our children, mindfully and lovingly.

Health, as the first pillar, is more than just physical well-being; it is the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. Parents can nurture this by fostering healthy thoughts (T) that give rise to positive emotions (E), which lead to healthy actions (A) and ultimately desirable results (R). Conscious communication about food, exercise, mindfulness, and rest can be a daily ritual. Encourage your child to express gratitude for good health, a practice that can be beautifully embedded in a daily gratitude journal. This simple practice aligns with Swamy’s teaching of seeing the divine in all aspects of life.

Relationships, the second pillar, thrive on love, understanding, and empathy. Through emotional regulation, showing your child how to navigate emotions gracefully can strengthen bonds. Simple acts like sharing daily highlights or expressing appreciation can turn into cherished family traditions. Seva, or service activities, are profound ways to cultivate empathy in children, allowing them to see the interconnectedness of life—a reflection of Sai Baba’s principle of loving all and serving all.

Financial Values, often overlooked in spiritual discourse, are crucial for grounding children in reality. Teaching children about money, saving, and sharing instills a sense of responsibility. This pillar relates closely to the T.E.A.R. formula, where positive financial thoughts and emotions guide wise actions and bring stable results. Include your children in simple financial decisions at home, thus teaching them the value of resources and the joy of sharing, as Swamy often reminded us of the importance of selfless giving.

Finally, the pillar of Knowledge is about nurturing a curiosity that extends beyond textbooks. Encourage learning as a joyous exploration rather than a duty. Teach through stories, not just lectures. Let education be a playful journey infused with the values of truth, love, and peace. An instance from my life: I would sit with my children every Sunday, sharing stories from various cultures, enriched by moral questions. These sessions became less about learning facts and more about understanding life—a practice inspired by Swamy’s call for education of the heart.

In integrating these pillars into daily life, we employ discipline with love, encouraging routines, dialogues, and reflections that foster growth and understanding. As Swamy beautifully put it, “The end of education is character.” This is our ultimate goal, to raise children who are not just successful, but profound in their humanity and spirituality.
