health routine for kids

Reflecting on my journey as a pediatrician, I’ve often been reminded of my dual roles as both a caregiver and a learner. Each day in my practice, I meet young souls with immense potential, and devoted parents eager for guidance. As a parent myself, and a seeker of spiritual wisdom, I have learned that raising a child is one of life’s most sacred responsibilities. I am touched by the teachings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who always emphasized the importance of nurturing not just the physical, but also the spiritual and moral dimensions of a child’s life.

From this perspective, I have come to understand that parenting is about building Four Pillars of Life for our children: Health, Relationships, Financial Values, and Knowledge. These pillars form the foundation upon which their future stands, and each is deeply interwoven with the T.E.A.R. Formula of Thoughts, Emotions, Actions, and Results.

Let us begin with Health, a cornerstone of life. I recall a family who visited me regularly; their young child had recurring health issues. With each visit, I observed how the parents’ conscious communication about health with their child slowly instilled in her a sense of self-care and awareness. By framing the importance of healthy decisions through positive thoughts and emotions, they inspired actions that eventually led to favorable health outcomes. Simple daily routines like family walks or mindful eating can profoundly shape a child’s relationship with their own body and mind.

Next, we explore Relationships, where emotional regulation becomes a powerful tool for harmony. A story from my own life comes to mind, one where my child struggled with a conflict at school. Instead of direct intervention, I practiced listening with empathy, a tenet inspired by Swamy’s teachings. This allowed my child to process emotions and approach the situation with understanding and compassion. Small acts of service, or seva, as inspired by Sai’s teachings, such as helping a friend or participating in community activities, lay the groundwork for empathy and strong social bonds.

Moving on to Financial Values, I remember a poignant story from a patient who, despite scarce resources, was instilling in his children the value of gratitude and wise financial choices. Through practices like gratitude journaling, they celebrated what they had instead of lamenting what they didn’t. This mindset, nurtured through thoughtful actions, sowed seeds for a secure and fulfilling future.

Knowledge, the final pillar, extends beyond academic pursuits. It’s about instilling a lifelong curiosity and love for learning. In my practice, I’ve seen how parents who share stories, engage in educational activities, and foster a questioning mind positively influence their children’s quest for knowledge. Encouraging children to explore, ask questions, and actively seek wisdom, guided by spiritual values, leads to well-rounded development.

Discipline, applied with love and not fear, strengthens each pillar. I recall advising parents on setting boundaries not with a stern hand, but with gentle understanding. This approach, aligned with Swamy’s teachings, nurtures self-discipline, kindness, and a respectful attitude.

As you embark on this sacred journey, may these principles guide you in shaping strong, value-driven individuals. Swamy beautifully encapsulated this quest for character and value: “The end of education is character.”
