seva with kids

Reflecting on my journey as both a pediatrician and a parent, I’ve realized that the lessons I’ve learned extend far beyond the confines of a medical textbook or the walls of my practice. These lessons often sprout from the soulful interactions with families seeking guidance for their children, and from my own experiences as an ever-learning parent. In my journey as a spiritual seeker, inspired by the teachings of Sai Baba, I have seen how the deepest understanding of life emerges when science harmonizes with spirituality.

Today, I’d like to gently guide you through a concept I’ve come to call “Sai-centric Parenting.” This philosophy emphasizes nurturing a child’s Four Pillars of Life: Health, Relationships, Financial Values, and Knowledge, harmonizing them through the T.E.A.R. Formula—Thoughts, Emotions, Actions, and Results.

Health is the first, vital pillar. As I have observed in my practice, a child’s body is akin to a delicate instrument in a grand orchestra. I remember a young patient who suffered from recurrent colds. While medicine provided relief, it was the simple routine of daily morning walks and a gratitude journal that aligned his thoughts to positive emotions, impacting his actions and resulting in improved health over time. Conscious communication about what we eat and why can deeply influence a child’s health awareness—a practice that is both medicinal and spiritual.

The second pillar is Relationships. Our interactions shape our children’s understanding of love and empathy. One family I encountered had a tradition of weekend seva activities. Participating in community services, they used these moments to teach their children empathy and humility. It’s through such conscious actions that individuals become compassionate human beings. Create simple yet meaningful family gestures, like a shared gratitude practice, to foster an environment where children feel loved, understood, and valued.

On the aspect of Financial Valueschildren learn what we model. Once, my own daughter astutely observed the act of giving—a Sai-inspired principle—and asked why we help others without anything in return. This opened a window for dialogue about the value of selflessness and the imperishable wealth of character. Teach children the joy in giving, saving, and spending wisely through small, routine actions that reflect long-term thinking. Discuss their thoughts and emotions around money to guide them toward actions that yield the most fulfilling results.

Lastly, Knowledge—the pillar that empowers. It is not limited to academic pursuits but includes the lifelong curiosity about self and society. Encourage your child’s questions and explore answers together. Build a home library reflective of diverse thoughts and experiences. In every bedtime story or science experiment, inject the values of inquiry and understanding. An incident that still warms my heart is when a curious young patient asked not just ‘how’ but ‘why’ medicine works the way it does—his genuine thirst for knowledge was inspiring.

In integrating these Four Pillars, the T.E.A.R. formula can become a guiding principle. Swamy’s teachings remind us that our children’s characters are shaped by the thoughts they cultivate and the actions they take. Thus, spiritual and moral education is not separate from daily life but interwoven beautifully within it.

Every act of discipline should be enveloped in love. Teach them to keep a gratitude journal to connect with their emotions, and encourage participatory discussions, inviting them to reflect on their choices and results.

Sai Baba once said, “The end of education is character.” This profound wisdom reminds us that while we build these pillars, the true goal is to nurture souls armed with character and kindness.
